Hey Gang!

Are you ready for another outdoor gathering? So are we!

The October Columbus Vegan Meetup will take place at the beautiful Scioto Audubon Metro Park, the downtown home of the new Audubon Center (http://www.grangeinsuranceauduboncenter.org/), an innovative structure that incorporates a plethora of green technologies to minimize its environmental footprint and appropriately grace the ongoing Whittier Peninsula restoration project.

One of the cool things about this particular wetlands restoration is its designation as an IBA , which means thousands of birds migrating from Central and South America use this spot along the Scioto River as a stopover during their long journeys. In addition, this former industrial site and waste dump is now home to multiple species of herons, turtles, and many other forms of wildlife!

We will plan on meeting at noon at the set of picnic tables located in the grassy area behind the boat docks in the park on the east side of the river. To get to the park located at 505 West Whittier Street (just west of German Village), from I-71, take the Greenlawn Avenue exit east one-third of a mile and turn left on South Front Street. Go a quarter of a mile and turn left on West Whittier Street. The entrance is one-third of a mile on the left. Then take an immediate left into the boat dock area and wind around until you reach the parking lot. We'll try to hang some meetup signs to direct everyone.

Our meal will be provided by the well-known and much-loved Tawd Bell of Rad Dog!

Here’s the lowdown:

As Metro Park regulations dictate that no money can be exchanged on park premises with outside vendors, we’re utilizing a feature on Meetup that, until now, has been untapped by our group… prepayment via Amazon.

For $9.50, you will receive a Rad Dog! combo consisting of:

*A vegan sandwich of your choice: Hot Dog (single or double in one bun), Beer Brat, Italian Sausage, Kielbasa, Beer Brat w/sauerkraut, peppers, onions & mustard, Chili Dog w/salsa, Reuben, or Sloppy Joe

*A cup of vegan chili

*Blue Sky Soda or water

*A Pattycake Vegan Bakery cookie

(FYI, $9.00 pays for the meal, and $ .50 covers the fee charged by Amazon)

Upon conclusion of our immersion in Rad Dog!'s toothsome fare, we’ll partake in a tour of the premises provided by an Audubon Center guide. For those interested, additional hiking on the Scioto Greenway and other nature trails and walking paths will take place thereafter... feel free to bring your non-human companion(s)!

IMPORTANT:

When you RSVP for the meetup, you’ll have 20 minutes to make your payment via Amazon. If the payment is not made within 20 minutes, you will automatically be dropped from the RSVP list.

We will be providing Tawd with a final head count the day before the event and, in the interest of fairness and guaranteeing Tawd payment for everyone included in the tally, no refunds will be issued to those who drop after the RSVP deadline and/or don’t show up for the event.

There is no attendance cap, and we kindly request that you not RSVP ‘Yes’ and pay unless you plan to be there.

We’re excited about this day of communing with nature and hope you are, too… we’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Debra and Doug

Good day lovely vegans,

Are you ready for another meetup? Ready or not, we've got another one comin' your way!

For the month of August, we'll be dining alfresco at On the Fly, sidekick to Dragonfly Neo-V.

If you've not yet immersed yourself in the delightful offerings of On the Fly, you're in for a treat. You can tickle your taste buds with falafel, a sesame roll, or chili and bread. Or you may elect to tantalize them with a portabella v steak or empanada. Thereafter, your buds will swoon should you choose to indulge in one (or more!) sweet delights. Check out the menu here:

http://neo-vevents.com/streetfoodmenu.pdf

We've reserved On the Fly's outdoor patio, and it offers a capacity of 20 people. Another 10 folks can fit inside, though the tables will only be available to us if no other customers are using them. We're setting the cap at 30, and if we get 30 “Yes” RSVP's and everyone shows up, we'll come up with some creative seating arrangements.

If the event fills up, a waiting list will be available. We kindly ask that all RSVP's be updated if plans change to enable someone else to attend and to assist us in providing On the Fly with as accurate a head count as possible.

It's a guaranteed good time with like-minded folks and scrumptious food!

Hope to see you there!

Happy July! Are you ready for some fun in the sun?

UPDATE... RAIN OR SHINE IN THE PAVILION
LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU THERE!

If so, then check out the Vegetarian/Vegan Combined Meetup Group Picnic! We'll begin around noontime at the Whetstone Park of Roses.

To participate in this event, please take note of the following:

• Vegan burgers, dogs, fixin's, reusable plates, forks, and cups, along with a cooler with ice and grill will be provided.

• Please bring a side dish and/or beverages to share, accompanied by a label with its name, the word 'VEGAN', and a list of ingredients. UPDATE: Also, we're asking everyone to bring a place setting for yourself and each guest (plate/cup/fork/whatever you think you'll want). This should help reduce the environmental impact and make cleanup a breeze! Please consider putting your name on the list, as it will be easier for other members to connect with you if they're interested in obtaining your recipe. Know what you're going to bring? Please include it when you RSVP. All vegan and vegetarian dishes will be labeled as such.

• Feel free to bring along some outdoor play stuff (frisbees, horseshoes, volleyball, hula hoops, etc).

• Since the picnic will be a combined event with the Vegetarian Meetup Group, if you belong to both groups, please make sure you sign up only once.

• Want to bring a guest? The more the merrier! How about pets? Sure, bring them too!

• Meetup Location: Whetstone Park of Roses is located off of High Street near Clintonville. As you drive toward the back of the park, there will be a single pavilion off to your left, surrounded by picnic tables. The pavilion is first-come-first-served; therefore, Dan, esteemed organizer of the Vegetarian Group, has kindly offered to secure it for everyone. If all goes well, that's where we'll meet; if not, there are plenty of picnic tables nearby. And feel free to bring blankets! Everything is located in the same area, so we shouldn't be hard to find. If you have any questions between now and then, feel free to send me an email.

This should be a wonderful day and a fabulous opportunity to enjoy the summer sunshine, great company and some delicious munchies. Hope to see you there!

Doug

***UPDATE***

Hey gang,

Remember when we mentioned the possibility of going with Plan B if Benevolence renovations weren't quite completed? Well, we just received word that that's the case. Benevolence has been hard at work, trying to get things up and running, but they still have to go through some inspections prior to opening to the public. Fear not... the meetup will go on!

Benevolence, on top of addressing renovation challenges and preparing for a ComFest presence, is intent on honoring its commitment to our group. Tricia from Benevolence has reserved a section of the upper level of North Market for us, and we are being offered the same options available at the Benevolence booth at ComFest. We, however, will have the luxury of not having to wait in a long line, and we'll have a comfy place to hang out. A Benevolence representative will visit us at North Market, take our order, pick up the food, and deliver it to us. The offerings and prices are as follows:

*All items are vegan and made by Benevolence Cafe*

Spicy Peanut Noodles 7.00
topped with Asian Slaw

Baked Tofu Wrap 6.00
(served with tahini dressing and veggies in an organic w/w wrap)

Hummus Salad Wrap 6.00
(served with veggies in an organic w/w wrap)

Small Benevolence Salad 5.00
served with our house vegan dressing

Cup of Cold Gazpacho Soup 3.00

Fresh Fruit Kabob 5.00

Almond Crunch Granola 3.00

Peanut Butter Hemp Bar 2.00

Fresh Squeezed Lemonade 2.00

There will be no tax added to these items and, if possible, it's recommended that you have the exact amount of cash you think you'll need for your selections.

Following the meetup, we hope you'll join us at ComFest!

Debra & Doug

Greetings, everyone!

For the month of June, as we're having our gathering while ComFest is in full-swing, we're going to convene at the ever-awesome (and close to the ComFest action) Benevolence Cafe!

For those of you who may not yet be aware, Benevolence is currently temporarily closed for renovations, but we have been informed that the restaurant is scheduled to reopen sometime during the week of ComFest. In the event Benevolence is unable to accommodate us due to unforeseen circumstances related to the renovation project, we've got a backup plan which will be announced if needed.

C'mon out and share a fabulous vegan meal with like-minded folks, and consider a stroll thereafter to Goodale Park to immerse yourself in the feel-good vibes of ComFest. A great time is guaranteed!

Hope to see you there!

Hello everyone!

The next Columbus Vegan Meetup will take place at P.F. Chang's China Bistro on Saturday, May 30th!

If you're not familiar with P.F. Chang's, there are several vegan selections available, designated as 'vegetarian' on the menu. You may elect to start out with a Vegetarian Lettuce Wrap or Spring Roll and progress to Coconut Curry Vegetables, Stir-Fried Eggplant, or one of several other options.

A final head count will be provided to P.F. Chang's the afternoon of Friday, May 29th, so the RSVP feature will be shut down at noon that day. We kindly request that all RSVP's be up-to-date by the deadline (this includes changing a "Maybe" to "Yes" or "No"). Thanks!

Hope you can join us to share a delicious meal and good conversation with other like-minded, compassionate folks!

Debra, Doug, Mairead, and Priya

P.S. We are very happy and excited about the growth the group has experienced over the past few months, and we've been discussing ideas for potential meetups that extend beyond sharing a meal. Your feedback and suggestions are welcome and encouraged, as they will help shape future events, so don't be shy... tell us what's on your mind!

And now for something completely different….for the April Meet-up, let’s get together for a joint event with the Vegetarian group for a pot-luck and movie screening. Here’s the plan:

- Please bring $2—to cover the cost of the room

- Please also bring a vegetarian or vegan dish to share. Please be sure to label your dish as Vegetarian or Vegan, and provide an ingredient list to place next to your dish .

- In celebration of Earth Day (one week late), we’ll be viewing the documentary, “A Delicate Balance.” For those unfamiliar with the film, A Delicate Balance is getting tremendous reviews for: providing information regarding the myths surrounding the production and consumption of animal products; demonstrating the link between meat consumption and colon cancer and Type 1 Diabetes; and for illustrating the link between meat production and water shortage, starvation, and poverty.” A Delicate Balance was selected for screening at the International Film Festival in Thailand and, more recently, at the Green Lifestyle Film Festival March 13-15, 2009 in Los Angeles. More information about the film, along with a trailer, can be found at: http://adelicatebalance.com.au/about.html

- Date and Time: Sunday, April 26th; 3pm (we’ll plan eat around 3:30 and start the movie at 4:30).

- Location: Unitarian Universalist Church at 93 West Weisheimer Rd (located one block off High, near Henderson), in Room 8.

With great people, delicious food, and two causes (animal welfare and environmental concerns) close to the heart of many of our members, this is one meet-up you won’t want to miss!

If you are a member of both the Vegan and Vegetarian Meetup Groups, please be sure to only sign up in one group.
Thanks!

Mad Mex has an extensive menu of tacos, enchiladas, salads, quesadillas, burritos and other Mexican-style food. In addition to clearly labeling items on the menu as vegetarian and vegan, they also offer substitutions (including vegan cheese and sour cream) that can be made to veganize other menu items.

We'll call ahead and request to be seated in our own section. Just tell the greeter you're with the Vegan Meetup group.

Parking ($1/3 hrs) is available in the garage off E 11th Ave or E 9th Ave.

Hello Columbus Vegan Meetup peeps!

Now that we've got a game plan for the group, Mairead, Priya, Doug and I would like to begin by encouraging attendance at the Rad Dog!/Sticky Bun Challenge at Pattycake Vegan Bakery!

This event, taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., will be a great way to connect with other group members and partake in the goodness offered by Rad Dog! and Pattycake!

Please rsvp if you plan to attend and, if you know what time you'll be there, you can post such in the comment section. Doug will be there from noon to 1:00 p.m., so if you can, please stop by and say hello!

Anyone up for a beer brat and/or sticky bun-eating contest?

Hope you can make it!
