Maybe we could organize a Pittsburgh Version ending at the Point of Pittsburgh with a picknick. Yes we are much smaller the New York but we could do something smaller to encourage more people in Pittsburgh and surrounding area to join us. Any thoughts?

FIRST VEGGIE PRIDE PARADE IN AMERICA

The First Veggie Pride Parade in America will take place in Greenwich
Village, New York City, on May 18, 2008.

The procession will begin at 12 Noon in the Old Meat District (where 9th Ave., Gansevoort St., Greenwich St., and Little West 12th St. intersect).
The parade will culminate in Washington Square Park (Eastern end), where a festival of rock music, speakers, and exhibitors will take place.
Parade participants are encouraged to dress up in costumes and to wear sign boards announcing their pride in their vegetarian lifestyle.
Local restaurants will represent themselves with banners. And otherwise, contingents from all walks of life are encouraged to get involved.
Participants may be animal-rights activists, environmentalists, or
people simply concerned with their health. They may be bricklayers
who just so happen to also be vegetarians (just one example). But on
May 18, 2008 all will come together with one voice, one expression,
of veggie pride.
At 2 p.m. on stage at the post-parade rally in Washington Square
Park, the winners of a costume and poster-slogan contest in various
categories will be announced.

At 4 p.m., also on stage, a 7-foot-tall human pea pod, Penelo Pea Pod (long-time mascot of parade sponsor VivaVegie Society) will be married in an open wedding ceremony. The lucky guy (ur, animal? vegetable?) has yet to be identified. Stay tuned. The secret will soon be out.

The parade is fashioned after, and will take place the same weekend as, the Veggie Pride Parade in Paris. The Parisian parade was the first of its kind ever to take place in the world and has been going on annually since 2001.

Parisian roots of the parade as well as the genesis for the New York
spin-off.

There was talk of having some sort of vegan festival for a while. There were a bunch of planning meetings, but then I stopped hearing about it and got the impression it had died. Anyone know for sure what the status is?

Mike,

I can speak only for myself, but I decided that for the time being, I needed to focus on my book, which has some messages that I feel could be beneficial for the vegan and vegetarian community as a whole. Thus, I "dropped out" of any planning on that front, at least for now. Also, Jen and I are considering the option of doing a larger vegan waffle party this year (esp. as it's the 10th annual party), possibly set up to raise funds and/awareness for the local vegan community. May or June are possibilities, and I'll share more after we've determined a few more details on our end. We're considering factors like whether to have it at our house as we always have or actually do it in a larger venue. I'll check w/Anne, Noah and others to try to avoid clashing w/ any other exciting things that may be in the works, as we'll likely need a few extra hands to make this one happen!

<grin of eager anticipation>

Actually, I just talked w/Jen a little more, and it's looking like the afternoon/eve. of Sat., May 24 is one of the few weekends around that time that will work for both of us for WaffleParty. This is still tentative until we check a few more things, but having it the weekend after a parade/accompanying celebration as David is interested in (assuming people wanted to make that happen) could almost allow for a "Pittsburgh Vegan Week." Maybe a few other people would want to host other things during that week, or on other days of those 2 weekends--kind of like Bike Pittsburgh's Bikefest. Just a crazy thought!
